First Playable Demo of Retrobooster

November 28, 2012 by Terry

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Yes, I’m about that excited to be making this announcement. Retrobooster finally has an actual playable demo awaiting your twitchy download finger. It has been vetted by testers (thank you testers!) and packaged for Windows and Linux. Visit the downloads page and give it a whirl.

Retrobooster is still a long way from being finished. This demo will see updates as work continues on the full game. If you like the demo, don’t forget to vote for Retrobooster on Steam Greenlight.

    The downloads are going really slow. Maybe you should try this

  2. Hi,

    It runs on my linux box, albeit pretty slow.
    I think my nVidia 8600 GT is too slow to run at 1920×1200 full screen.
    I tried to find a way to run windowed in a smaller resolution: is this possible?

    Also, I got this assertion failure, although the program did not quit on it:

    $ retrobooster-demo –help
    Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-close.c: 759: _dl_close: Assertion `map->l_init_called’ failed!

    • Hi Bram. It’s not particularly fast on my 6800 GT, which is in the same class as your 8600 GT. What CPU do you have?

      I haven’t seen an error like that yet, but I’ll watch for it. There are no command line options, so -help should have no effect. Thanks for the feedback.

      • I have:
        Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz
        GeForce 8600 GT/PCIe/SSE2
        Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

        So there is no way to run windowed instead of fullscreen?

        • Press Alt-Enter to switch to windowed mode. Press F1 to see FPS. I can’t find any good comparisons between Pentium M and Pentium 4, but I suspect the Pentium M is your real bottleneck. With a Pentium 4 2.66GHz and a 6800 GT AGP I get 20-60 FPS, depending on how much action is going on. It’s quite playable that way.

    The demo is beautiful! Really liked all those cloud effects. Runs just fine on windows 7

  4. When will a a 64-bit version for GNU/Linux be available?

    • Currently, I don’t see a good reason to distribute a 64-bit version. The 32-bit version works fine all my 64-bit distros. Are you having any trouble with the 32-bit version?
